Hacking a plug-in timer for battery operation Last modified 15 Feb 12 I needed a battery-operated timer for an LED project, but all I could find at the local hardware store were the cheap, plug-in-the-wall timers for AC appliances. Ever since I’ve owned my diesel Caddy, I really wished it had a tachometer. The one option that is available on later model VW diesels is the “W-terminal” alternator. This alternator has an extra terminal labeled “W” that allows an RPM-proportional signal that can drive a dash-mounted tachometer. It is common on the turbo diesel models and requires a full gauge cluster swap to have the tach replace the stock clock. The “W-terminal” also is used to drive the “upshift” indicator that is apparently used on certain ’82 and later models.
Pin 3 should have a wire coming off to a row much further right than the timer (preferably 7 rows from the end of the timer). Now place in some more hook-up wire as above. The wires should jump two rows and alternate their vertical placement between top and second to top, except for the second to last one which should be on the middle row.
I put together two testers which allow them to quickly hook up a servo or a motor and test it. The testers allow full range of servo motion and full range of motor speeds from full forward to full reverse. Both of the testers use exactly the same circuity; a timer with a variable resistor using a potentiometer to set the pulse width. For the servo tester, this PWM signal directly controls the position of the servo. The video below shows an oscilloscope capturing a PWM pulse output from an Arduino.
