Gambling The Salvation Army is opposed to gambling. The nature of gambling lends itself to exploitative, deceptive and manipulative practices. It is contrary to Christian principles of love, freedom from oppression and concern for others. As such it should not be a means of income generation or economic development, whether by government agencies, charitable organisations, churches or commercial interests. Context Gambling involves the exchange of money or goods wagered in artificially created games of chance. The gains of the winners are made at the expense of the losers. People may begin gambling in an apparently harmless way, but for some, continued participation leads to dependency and a host of other social, psychological and spiritual problems. Gambling is becoming increasingly common and accessible, often promoted and enabled by governments.

This new policy officially went into effect in October but I’m finding more and more people who aren’t aware of it. Just recently, I sat in on a blogger’s roundtable that gave more information about the policy and also allowed us to hear personal stories from soldiers who had utilized the policy.

By Rod Powers Updated January 25, There are some specific rules about fraternizing in the Army, which has been updated in recent years to clearly define what’s acceptable and what isn’t. The goal isn’t to discourage soldiers from having any interpersonal relationships, or to prevent team-building among units, but to avoid unfair treatment and the appearance of unfair treatment between an officer or NCO and his subordinates.

Part of the challenge of writing and understanding the Army’s policy is that “fraternizing” is sometimes used to mean an inappropriate or prohibited relationship, when in fact, all three are different. Relationships to Avoid in the Army Essentially the rules seek to prevent inappropriate relationships between higher-ranking personnel and their subordinates. Relationships of the same and opposite genders are prohibited if they fall into any of the following categories: For instance, if an officer is spending more time with one of his subordinates than others, the appearance of favoritism could certainly arise.

And an officer who spends time with subordinates in social settings, or who calls subordinates by their first names, for example, may bring his authority or fairness into question. Other Prohibited Relationships in the Army Some relationships between certain categories of soldiers , such as non-commissioned officers and enlisted personnel, are also prohibited under the Army’s fraternization policy.

These can include ongoing business relationships; dating or shared living accommodations other than those necessary to Army operations and sexual relationships; and gambling, where one soldier may end up owing another money. Such relationships were not specifically covered under the Army policy until recently but were considered unwritten rules. Business Relationships Among Troops And there are some situations where the above rules don’t apply.

For instance, the “business relationships” clause doesn’t apply to a landlord-tenant relationship, and one-time transactions like the sale of a car from one soldier to another are allowed.

Bio Follow March 5, A federal judge struck down the Army’s equal-opportunity promotion process yesterday, saying the policy gives undue preference to women and minorities at the expense of white, male officers. The Army’s written direction to promotion boards that urges them to consider the"past personal or institutional discrimination” faced by women and minorities is unconstitutional because the policy does not order the board also to consider possible discrimination against white men, the judge found.

District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth wrote in a page opinion. The decision came in the three-year-old case of retired Lt. Raymond Saunders, a white officer who was twice denied promotion to the rank of full colonel in and He retired in as a judge advocate general — an Army lawyer — and then filed suit. His case is one of several filed by white Army officers, and a fewer number filed by officers in other branches of the armed services, that allege the military has been giving too much consideration to race and gender in promotions.

Lamberth’s ruling, which legal analysts said yesterday closely followed Supreme Court precedent, finds that Army policies emphasizing race and gender considerations were not justified because the agency failed to show any history of discrimination against women or minority officer candidates.

Storming of Redoubt 10 during the Siege of Yorktown The Continental Army was created on 14 June by the Continental Congress as a unified army for the colonies to fight Great Britain, with George Washington appointed as its commander. As the Revolutionary War progressed, French aid, resources, and military thinking influenced the new army. A number of European soldiers came on their own to help, such as Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben , who taught the army Prussian tactics and organizational skills.

The army fought numerous pitched battles and in the South —81 sometimes used the Fabian strategy and hit-and-run tactics , hitting where the enemy was weakest, to wear down the British forces. Washington led victories against the British at Trenton and Princeton , but lost a series of battles around New York City in and Philadelphia in With a decisive victory at Yorktown , and the help of the French, the Continental Army prevailed against the British.

After the war, though, the Continental Army was quickly given land certificates and disbanded in a reflection of the republican distrust of standing armies. State militias became the new nation’s sole ground army, with the exception of a regiment to guard the Western Frontier and one battery of artillery guarding West Point ‘s arsenal.

However, because of continuing conflict with Native Americans, it was soon realized that it was necessary to field a trained standing army. The Regular Army was at first very small, and after General St. Clair’s defeat at the Battle of the Wabash, the Regular Army was reorganized as the Legion of the United States , which was established in and renamed the “United States Army” in Despite the Burning of York and Death of Tecumseh which caused his Indian confederacy to collapse, an invasion of Canada failed, and U.

However, the Regular Army, under Generals Alexander Macomb and Samuel Smith , proved they were professional and capable of defeating the British army during the invasions of Plattsburgh and Baltimore , and the relatively small US Navy, often attached with Marines , earned most of the victory against the Royal Navy at sea. Two weeks after a treaty was signed, Andrew Jackson defeated the British in the Battle of New Orleans and became a national hero.
